An anomaly during the pandemic, Sunscope experienced its best year ever in 2020, with sales up 95.5%. Such remarkable growth in a down year can be attributed to the supplier’s aggressive plunge into PPE. In fact, it accounted for over 80% of the company’s sales in 2020, including 43% of sales from decorated masks and gaiters (figures verified from Counselor conversations with top distributors who purchased significant amounts of PPE from the company). COO Dilip Bhavnani spearheaded the quick pivot, relying on firsthand accounts of how the pandemic was affecting China and Europe, then securing an ample supply of raw materials to manufacture the in-demand items. Don’t expect a repeat in 2021, however. Sunscope is refocusing on custom sourcing and design as well as large-quantity programs in lieu of its traditional domestic in-stock business. In addition, the company expects that 2021 sales will normalize to pre-COVID levels.
