Employees’ favorite perk: The company’s annual “Holiday in the Summer” party may be employees’ favorite event, but being a candy and snack company comes with its own advantages. “It’s not unusual for a tray of assorted fresh-baked cookies or tin full of chocolate bark just out of our kitchen to make its way to our employees,” says Margaret Dengler, director of sales & marketing. “Call it an occupational hazard!”

David Katz, executive vice president and partner at Bethpage, NY-based Midnite Snax, discusses fostering a family-like company culture, retaining top notch employees and knowing when to cut loose and celebrate your team’s hard work.

Tip for finding/retaining great staff: “There’s no magic bullet for our retention,” Dengler says. “We expect a lot from our employees, but we make a conscious effort to treat them with dignity and respect, and ensure that they do so among themselves as well – no different than we would want to be treated as owners. We’ve had many employees with us for double-digit years, and we believe this philosophy has a lot to do with that.”

Company culture mantra: “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten. By that we mean that we foster initiative, leadership and outside-the-box thinking,” Dengler says. “We encourage our employees at all levels to contribute and collaborate equally with the end goal of representing our distributor partners at a very high level to their customers.”
