Tip for finding/retaining great staff: Hire for attitude. Most skills needed are easily taught but you can’t teach great attitude. It’s also important to have a great benefits package. “Our employees are allowed time to be creative and make cool things,” says President Kathy Thomas. “If they have something difficult going on in their life, we work through it together.”

Company culture mantra: “We are family,” says Thomas. “We spend more time at work than we do at home, so this has to be fun! My most important job is the culture of this company. If I spend my time taking care of the employees – truly listen to their ideas, their life stories, challenges or celebrations, have their back but also empower them to make decisions that help our customers be successful – we’re far more so than if I ‘manage’ them. I acknowledge that they often know more than I do and that I don’t have all the answers but we can find them together. My job, along with my managers, is to create a place where employees feel they belong and are valued.
