Penn Emblem Gives Masks to Struggling Philly Neighborhood
The supplier has teamed with producers of the Emmy-nominated documentary “Kensington in Crisis.”
Trevose, PA-based Penn Emblem Company (asi/77120) is the latest supplier to use its manufacturing capability to help its community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pivoting to personal protective equipment (PPE) earlier this year, Penn Emblem has partnered with the producers of the Emmy nominated documentary “Kensington in Crisis” to supply face masks to the struggling Philadelphia neighborhood. The masks were distributed by producers Jill Frechie, John Ricciutti and Jon Powell, according to Tyler Joseph, digital marketing manager at Penn Emblem. “The partnership was formed because our president Randi Blumenthal is great friends with Jill Frechie,” Joseph said.
Among the nation’s counties with at least 1 million residents, Philadelphia had the highest rate of overdose deaths in 2017, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts, an independent nonprofit. The city’s Department of Health estimates that 75,000 residents are addicted to heroin and other opioids, and each day, many of them go to Kensington to buy drugs. The neighborhood is part of the largest cluster of overdose deaths in the city, The New York Times Magazine reported.
Additionally, more than 700 citizens are homeless in Kensington, WHYY reported. The documentary “Kensington in Crisis” sheds light on the issues, problems and solutions faced with opioid addiction, bringing awareness and education to this growing plague.
