Limited-Edition KFC Meal Box Includes Power Bank
The latest gimmick from the colonel isn’t a heart-clogging, chicken-stacking “pseudo-sandwich.” Instead, fast-food joint KFC is doubling down on technology, offering a limited-edition five-in-one meal box that includes an integrated power bank so diners can charge their phones as they snack on finger-licking foodstuffs. Dubbed “Watt a Box,” the promotion was created with the help of Blink Digital and is available only in India.
“Each one of us spends a considerable time on our smartphones daily, and the phone battery going dead is almost like a nightmare,” Lluis Ruiz Ribot, chief marketing officer of KFC India, told news outlets in that country.
The meal box is equipped with magnetic flaps and a removable power bank on its side. It includes micro-USB and Lightning cables to charge both iPhone and Android smartphones. People in Delhi and Mumbai have the opportunity to try out the “Watt a Box” by winning a contest on KFC’s Facebook page.
It’s a cool idea, but don’t get too excited, says tech blog BGR. Bloggers from its India bureau tested out one of the power banks, noting that it took just half an hour to drain the battery. During that period, the iPhone 5s being charged only received a 17% battery boost. Still, in a pinch, it’s better than nothing.
This isn’t the first time a fast-food chain has experimented with high-tech reuses for meal containers. McDonald’s created a special Happy Meal box for Swedish customers that transformed – with a little help from a smartphone – into a virtual reality viewer known as “Happy Goggles.”
