Trend Forecast: Apparel in 2021

Based on extensive research and surveys taken by our editorial team, we’ve compiled a few apparel trends that are projected to make big waves in the industry this upcoming year.

Protective Gear

Masks and neck gaiters have certainly had their day in the sun this year, and these trends don’t show any signs of slowing down in 2021. But … make it fashion! There’s been an uptick in protective gear emblazoned with bright patterns, bold colors and more personality. Additionally, global use of PPE will likely continue for at least the first quarter of 2021.

Outerwear

While large-scale events will continue to take a back seat into the new year, gatherings are not gone completely. Hosts of get-togethers are more likely to plan their events for the great outdoors to encourage physical distancing. That means outerwear is a must! Light jackets, cozy sweaters, knit beanies and more are expected to see a rise in 2021.

Comfort & Functionality

Many businesses have returned their employees to a safe office environment, but the quarantine of 2020 brought with it a lasting shift to comfortable apparel. This doesn’t necessarily mean sweatpants and hoodies will reign supreme, but we’re forecasting a shift to professional working attire that has a killer comfort factor.

Nostalgia & Formalwear

They say fashion is cyclical, and we’re not debating it. Suppliers have seen an uptick in orders for styles from the 1990s such as matching sweatsuits, plaid flannel and baby-doll dresses. Additionally, after a vaccine is thoroughly distributed, we anticipate a renewed excitement around getting dressed up for a night on the town!

Sustainability

Basics like T-shirts and hoodies are expected to continue to bring in profits for distributors in 2021, but more and more consumers are focused on the quality of these items. Battling climate change is at the forefront of public consciousness now that we’ve seen the devastation caused by a global crisis. Due to this concern, we’re projecting a rise in the popularity of sustainable apparel that lasts (and a rise in capsule wardrobes).

Now that you know what types of apparel to pitch in 2021, you’re probably wondering what colors consumers will be looking for. Never fear! We’ve got a great blog post about it here.
