Gildan Nominates New Directors to Board
Montreal-based Gildan Activewear (asi/56842) announced this week the nominations of four people to serve on its board of directors. They are: Maryse Bertrand, Marc Caira, Charles M. Herington and Craig Leavitt. Shareholders will vote on the nominees at an upcoming meeting on May 3.
“The competitive dynamics in the apparel industry continue to evolve, and these proposed director candidates are highly accomplished individuals who will bring a wealth of experience to the board as the company continues to grow,” said Gildan Chairman Bill Anderson.
Bertrand, who has a law background, is currently an advisor in corporate governance and risk management and is a member of the board of directors at both the National Bank of Canada as well as grocery and pharmaceutical distribution firm Metro Inc. Meanwhile, among other roles, Caira is the vice chairman of the board of directors of Restaurant Brands International Inc. Previously, Caira was president and CEO of Tim Hortons Inc.
Herington is the COO, vice chairman and president of global operations at Zumba Fitness LLC, a provider of dance fitness classes. Herington also has present or past ties to Molson Coors Brewing Company, Avon, Revlon and Pepsi. Finally, Leavitt most recently served as CEO of Kate Spade & Company. He also spent several years at retailers Diesel and Polo Ralph Lauren.
With these nominations, Gildan is proposing to increase the size of its board from nine to 12 directors. Current director Sheila O’Brien will not be running for re-election, Gildan said.
Counselor ranks Gildan as the ninth largest supplier in the industry, after estimating the firm generated 2016 North American promo products sales of $150 million.
