Color systems firm Pantone has announced that marsala – an earthy shade of red – is its color of the year for 2015. Pantone chose marsala after studying fashion and cultural trends, and after receiving opinions from entertainment, travel and technology experts. “Marsala enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability,” said Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of Pantone.

Designers and brands like Daniel Silverstain, Hervé Léger by Max Azria and Dennis Basso have already embraced marsala in their spring 2015 lines. The color is also likely to be used in beauty products, as well as interior and graphic design patterns. “Much like the fortified wine that gives marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness,” said Eiseman. “This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.”

Pantone expects marsala to be a popular color choice for not only shirts, jackets and dresses, but also jewelry and accessories like handbags, hats, footwear and wearable technology items. In design, according to Pantone, the hue “will be especially prominent in striping and floral patterns found in printed placemats, dinnerware, bedding and throws.” As a contrasting and complementary color, Pantone believes marsala pairs well with neutrals like warmer taupes and grays, as well as amber, umber, golden yellows, turquoise, teal and vibrant blues.

New Jersey-based Pantone, a wholly-owned subsidiary of X-Rite Inc., has been naming a color of the year since 2000. Other recent color winners include radiant orchid (2014), emerald (2013), tangerine tango (2012), honeysuckle (2011) and turquoise (2010).
