Fire Hazard Triggers Mug Recall
The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall of a batch of monogrammed ceramic mugs because they were mislabeled as “microwave safe” and could cause a threat of fire. A China-based manufacturer incorrectly labeled monogrammed ceramic mugs as microwave safe, creating a fire threat and prompting a recall.
Altar’d State, a Knoxville, TN-based fashion retailer that is not an ASI-listed supplier, sold about 7,800 of the mislabeled mugs – which were manufactured in China – at its U.S. retail locations between October and December of last year. At least one consumer reported that a mug sparked while in the microwave, compelling Altar’d State to issue a voluntary recall of the mugs in cooperation with the CPSC. No injuries have been reported.
Imported from China by Creative Co-Op Inc. of Memphis, TN, the mugs present a fire hazard because they feature metallic paint that can spark if microwaved. Retailed for $15, the white 16-ounce mugs have gold-painted monograms and accent rims, rope-style handles and a textured design resembling a golf ball. “Microwave safe” is printed on the bottom of the mugs.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled coffee mugs and contact Altar’d State for instructions on returning the product for a full refund,” says a recall notice from the CPSC.
While none of the monogrammed mugs have been connected to sales in the promotional products industry, the recall highlights the intense scrutiny placed by the CPSC on product safety today.
