Cintas Reports Emissions & Energy Reductions
The Top 40 distributor recently released its fiscal 2023 sustainability report.
Top 40 distributor Cintas (asi/162167) reduced its greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 11% and reduced energy usage intensity by 13% last year, according to its recently released 2023 sustainability report.
The report, now in its fourth year, details the Cincinnati-based company’s performance in fiscal year 2023, which ended May 31, 2023.
“Cintas’ heritage is rooted in our collective commitment to efficiency, innovation and excellence – and this year was no exception,” said Todd Schneider, president and CEO.
The distributor, which has a Bronze rating from sustainability assessment company EcoVadis, highlighted a number of achievements among its environmental, social and governance (ESG) efforts:
- Cintas reported a total recordable injury rate (TRIR) of 1.53, which the company noted was the lowest in its history. OSHA developed the TRIR measurement, which looks at the number of recordable incidents per 100 full-time workers during a year.
- It reduced greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 35% since the fiscal 2019 base year, including a more than 11% decrease in fiscal 2023.
- It reduced energy use intensity by 33% since the fiscal 2019 base year, with a 13% decrease in fiscal 2023.
- Cintas posted a 9% reduction in both water withdrawal and total water consumed since the fiscal 2019 base year.
- It also focused on reducing waste and circularity, diverting more than 2,100 tons of waste from landfills through zero-waste programs at several of its distribution centers and partnering with the nonprofit Accelerating Circularity to identify ways to repurpose, remake and reuse its apparel.
- In addition. the company noted that it’s donated more than $11 million through philanthropic partnerships since fiscal year 2019, giving to industries including the American Cancer Society, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the American Heart Association.
“In 2023, we continued to deliver significant progress in our efforts in diversity, equity and inclusion, health and safety, environmental stewardship and other sustainability programs, all while driving innovation to advance our key initiatives,” said Christy Nageleisen, vice president of ESG.
Based on estimated 2022 North American promotional product revenue of $199.1 million, Cintas ranked 16th on Counselor’s most recent list of the largest distributors in the industry.
Promo is only a small part of Cintas’ overall business. The publicly traded firm is best known for its uniform rental and facility services. In fiscal year 2023, Cintas reported total company revenue of $8.8 billion, a 12% year-over-year increase.
