Finland To EU Ministers: ‘No Swag For You’
Finland is saying no to swag.
The Scandinavian country will not be providing souvenirs/branded gifts to the European Union officials who will be visiting Finland for a half-dozen ministerial meetings and about 90 meetings for civil servants this summer and autumn, according to Yleisradio Oy (Yle), Finland’s national public broadcasting company.

That’s a break in custom. Typically, nations acting as president of the Council of the EU – which Finland is for the next half-year – have provided various presents and souvenirs to ministers from other Euro nations attending meetings in their homeland.
Instead, Finland will be using the money it would have spent on merch to help finance projects focused on reducing carbon emissions. “Host countries spend large sums on gifts during each EU presidency," Anja Laisi, who heads the Secretariat for Finland’s presidency, told Yle. "We're putting that money into emissions compensation. We'll spend half a million euros on offsetting the aviation emissions of those attending the meetings."
Finland also will not be providing plastic water bottles. It’s all part of what Finnish officials say is the ecological emphasis of the nation’s half-year term in the EU presidency. Themed as “Sustainable Europe – Sustainable Future,” Finland’s prime minister says the main goal for the country’s presidency is to get the EU to commit to emissions cuts aimed at climate neutrality by 2050.
