Lewiston, ME-headquartered Top 40 distributor Geiger (asi/202900) recently received the Environmental Leadership Award by the Maine Institute for Family-Owned Business.

At the institute’s 25th anniversary gala, the judges praised Geiger’s 100% carbon neutral shipping and its offsetting paper usage by planting trees. As part of its 2017 headquarters overhaul, the distributor installed 696 solar panels, the largest business array in the state, which generates all of the company’s annual electricity usage.

Solar power eliminates approximately 320,000 pounds of carbon emissions. Geiger says it mitigated 2,514,724 pounds of carbon emissions in 2018, adding that those savings will continue and grow year after year.

“As a family-owned company, we can be concerned about more than earning profits,” said Gene Geiger, the firm’s chairman. “We have a responsibility to our community and our planet. We are committed to sustainable practices. At the same time, we have to do more. We all have to do more.”

With reported 2017 North American promotional products revenue of $185.5 million, Geiger ranked 10th on Counselor’s latest list of the largest distributors in the industry.
