Gildan Joins US Cotton Trust Protocol
The move is part of the Top 40 promo supplier’s broader sustainability efforts.
Top 40 supplier Gildan (asi/56842), one of the world’s largest manufacturers of apparel basics, has become a member of the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, a farm-level science-based program that sets standards for more sustainably grown cotton.
By joining, Gildan and other members can measure and verify that the cotton fiber element of their supply chain is more sustainably grown with lower environmental and social risk.
“Joining the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol is a natural next step in our sustainability and transparency journey as it will increase transparency into our supply chain, while also providing us with additional assurance that the cotton we purchase from the U.S. is sustainably grown,” said Gildan President/CEO Glenn Chamandy.
The U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol brings quantifiable and verifiable goals and measurements to sustainable cotton production. It aims to lessen environmental impact by driving advancements on six sustainability metrics: land use, soil carbon, water management, soil loss, GHG emissions and energy efficiency.
Gildan says it has a history of focusing on sustainability and corporate social responsibility, something the company indicates has intensified in recent years. In 2020, for instance, Gildan ranked 32nd on The Wall Street Journal’s ranking of the Top 100 Most Sustainably Managed Companies. With estimated 2019 North American promotional product revenue of $624 million, Gildan ranked fifth on Counselor’s most recent list of the 40 largest suppliers in the industry. The new rankings are due out in July.
