Merch Tent Returns to U.S. Open
The tournament is one of pro golf’s four majors.
The merch tent is back at the U.S. Open.
The competition, one of professional golf’s four major tournaments, tees off on Thursday, June 17, at Torrey Pines in California. Attendees will once again be able to buy branded merchandise for the event at a shop on site. In 2020, the merch tent was nixed because of COVID-19 restrictions, though golf fans could still snap up swag from an online shop.
Official 2021 U.S. Open merch is also available through the United States Golf Association’s web platform. Still, the return of the onsite merch tent – which is open on two sides and thus qualifies as an outdoor space by California standards – seems to be another signal of the growing return to something like normal for live events and the branded products that support them.
While the 2021 tent is no slouch at 12,000 square feet, that’s less than a third of the size of the 42,000-square-foot merchandise emporium that featured at Torrey Pines when the U.S. Open was last held there in 2008.

Nonetheless, there’s no shortage of on-trend logoed products for attendees to select. Caps, bucket hats, T-shirts, pullovers, belts, drinkware, hooded sweatshirts, posters, ball markers, divot repair tools, club head covers, bag tags, towels, hole flags, vests, quarter-zips and more all figure in the eclectic mix.
Mary Lopuszynski, the USGA’s managing director of merchandising and licensing, told Golfweek that caps/hats are typically the biggest seller, as they’re less expensive, can be worn immediately and make an easy gift. Clothing and lifestyle items are also popular, she said.
The collection also tips off a few trends that could be notable for promotional products distributors to keep an eye on. Those include the use of lively patterns, like tie-dye and all-over prints, that aren’t necessarily associated with the more conservative style typical of golf.
