CPSC Recalls Drinkware From Pier 1 Imports, Michaels
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued official recalls for handled coffee mugs from Pier 1 Imports, Inc., of Fort Worth, TX, and ceramic travel mugs from Michaels Stores Procurement Co. Inc., a subsidiary of The Michaels Companies Inc., of Irving, TX. No ASI-listed companies were named in the recalls.
The China-made Chalk Note Mug from Pier 1 can crack when filled with hot liquid, posing a burn hazard. Pier 1 has received eight reports of mugs cracking, though no injuries have yet been reported. The lids on Michaels’ Celebrate It ceramic travel mugs, also made in China, fail to fit securely and can cause hot liquid to leak when the mug is tilted. They also lack a silicone hand wrap. Michaels has received one report of the lid leaking, though no injuries have been reported.
Designed to be written on with chalk, the stoneware Chalk Note Mugs were sold in black and measure 5.25-inches tall by 5 inches in diameter. The words “Stoneware” and “Pier 1 Imports” are printed on the bottom. Approximately 15,300 mugs were sold at Pier 1 Imports stores and at www.pier1.com from March 2016 through April 2017 for about $8. Approximately 900 were sold in Canada.
The Celebrate It mugs measure 6.5-inches tall, hold 16 oz. of liquid and were available in four designs: “Motherhood: The Greatest Adventure” with a lime green lid; “MOM” with a lime green lid; blue floral with a turquoise lid; and pink floral with a pink lid. Only those mugs with a bottom label printed with SKU 508992 and UPC code 886946619458 are included in the recall. An estimated 27,000 mugs were sold at Michaels stores from March 2017 through April 2017 for about $8.
Consumers who purchased the Chalk Note Mugs are asked to stop use immediately and contact Pier 1 Imports for a full refund or merchandise credit. Consumers of the Celebrate It ceramic travel mugs should also stop use immediately and return the drinkware to any Michaels location for a full refund.
