Igloo Coolers Recalled After Child Becomes Trapped

Igloo products are sold in the promotional products industry, but indications are that the coolers in question were purchased at retail.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says a child became trapped in an Igloo cooler and had to be freed by an adult because the product's stainless steel latch automatically locks when the lid is closed.

Katy, TX-based Igloo Products Corp., in conjunction with the CPSC, has now voluntarily issued a recall on approximately 60,000 of the Igloo Marine Elite line of coolers. Only those that are white with stainless steel latches are under recall.

These Igloo Marine Elite Coolers are among those being recalled.

"Consumers should immediately put the coolers out of the reach of children," the CPSC said in a statement.

While Igloo products are sold in the promotional products industry, authorities indicated that the coolers in question were purchased at retail. From January 2015 through March 2019, the CPSC says the coolers sold for between $10 and $180 at West Marine, Sportman’s Warehouse, and other home and recreational stores nationwide. The coolers also retailed online at Amazon.com and www.igloocoolers.com.

Top 40 supplier Gemline (asi/56070) carries Igloo items, but company President Jonathan Isaacson confirmed to Counselor that Gemline doesn’t sell the coolers under recall.

“As far as I know, these are not sold in the industry,” Isaacson said. “Our experience with Igloo is that they have a terrific product and a strong commitment to safety and compliance. So, if there is an issue with this item, it is an anomaly.”

Made-in-the-USA for use on boats and marine environments, the coolers being recalled feature the Igloo logo embossed on a metal latch and on the outside of the product. The coolers were sold in 54, 72, 94, 110, and 150 quart sizes. “Igloo Marine Elite Cooler” and the quart size are printed on a label on the coolers. The 110 quart model of the cooler has two wheels and a metal handle for pulling.

When the lid is closed, "a person... (can) become locked inside the air tight container, posing entrapment and suffocation hazards," the CPSC says.

The CPSC says to contact Igloo for instructions on removing and disposing the old latch -- and for a free replacement latch.
