Obituary: John C. Clegg
John C. Clegg, father of Clegg Promo (asi/45450) founder and CEO Tim Clegg and company president Kevin Clegg, passed away on May 4.
Clegg was class president and valedictorian in high school, a mathematics major at Manhattan College, a computer programmer at Sperry Gyroscope, manager of information systems at ATO/SMG and then chief information officer at Standard Products.
In 1994, Clegg threw himself into a new role as gadfly, ombudsman and outside factory rep for Clegg Industries. He relished traveling through Ohio and the Midwest, visiting distributors in offices, parking lots, homes and barns. Not only did he become a master at presenting the Clegg line, he also became well known on the trade show circuit. In addition to presenting, he was a tireless proofreader and editor for numerous Clegg and Americhip catalogs.
Community service was the work Clegg most enjoyed and for which he will be lovingly remembered. He was a coach, referee and commissioner of the basketball program for the Chagrin Athletic Association, a board member on the Chagrin Valley Rec Center, a lector at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and a fixture at all Chagrin Falls High School sporting events for over 50 years.
“Our Dad loved Clegg and Americhip and he gave his all to make us a better organization,” said Tim and Kevin. “We were so blessed to have him as our father and equally as fortunate to have him as part of the Clegg and Americhip team. We’ll continue to work hard, do well, improve, treat people well and make a difference in what we do and in how we do it. We know that would make our Dad very proud of us.”
Clegg was a beloved husband to Eileen Dearie Clegg for 59 years. He was the father of seven children and 21 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a “Membership Scholarship in the Name of John C. Clegg” at the Chagrin Valley Rec. Center, PO Box 84, Chagrin Falls, OH 44022.
