The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has expanded a recall for power supply units for thermal printers. The units, imported by Zebra Technologies Corp., of Lincolnshire, IL, serve as the power source for Zebra manufactured thermal industrial printers used to make bar codes and other commercial labels.

Over time, the units, manufactured by Taiwan-based FSP Group, can corrode when exposed to moisture and then overheat, posing a fire hazard. So far, Zebra Technologies has received 30 reports of the units overheating or catching fire, damaging the connected printer and surrounding workspace. No injuries have yet been reported, and no ASI-listed companies were named in the recall.

The number of units under recall is now over 1.3 million, up from 166,000 recalled in December 2016. The recall now includes units manufactured by the FSP Group between October 1, 2006 and December 31, 2012.

The Zebra logo or FSP North America logo, date code and part number are printed on the power supply, which were sold as after-market kits or included in the sale of almost 100 different Zebra printers. The full list is here.

The printers were sold via direct sales from Zebra as well as through distributors and resellers, including BlueStar Inc., Ingram Micro Data Capture Pos. Div., ScanSource and Wynit Distribution LLC from October 2006 through June 2013 for between $340 and $2,000 with Zebra printers, and for about $130 as an after-market accessory.

“Printer owners should immediately stop using the recalled power supply units and contact Zebra for a free replacement power supply,” stated the CPSC in its official recall notice.
