Fall/Winter 2016 New York Fashion Week brought dozens of new styles that will no doubt be worn by fashionistas everywhere when the summer ends. However, unlike previous fashion weeks, you won’t have to wait six months to buy your favorite designers’ runway pieces in stores. And while the temperatures are still low, at least up North, you can start experimenting with some of these top trends now.

Fur

Fur was featured all over the runways. Every designer had a unique way to use fur, whether real or faux, whether it was Rodarte’s feathery fur coats, Michael Kors’ floral-printed, pastel-colored fur jackets or Marc Jacobs asymmetrical fur shawl and coat combination. Alexander Wang featured fur logos on his hoodies, and Altuzarra showed a printed jacket with a cozy-looking fur lining on the neck. When the temps drop again, fur will be the chicest way to keep any part of your body warm, even your fingernails.

Mixed Media

Print mixing has been popular for the past few seasons, but a new type of mixing and matching is taking over. Combining velvet, leather, knit and, of course, fur pieces creates a fashionable, multi-dimensional look. If mixing separate pieces with different materials seems daunting, many designers have also created single pieces with multiple materials, like Alexander Wang’s bomber pea coat, which has a wool double-breasted torso and silky bomber jacket sleeves. The trend works especially well on monochrome outfits by adding some variety to an otherwise basic look.

Deep Purple

Designers were making it “reign” on the runways this Fashion Week with royalty-inspired purples. The color of royalty doesn’t have to be worn on only fancy garments, as Alexander Wang featured dark purple mohair beanies and sweaters. Elie Tahari proved the darker color pops against dark neutrals, with an eggplant-hued coat that stood out from his collection’s dark silhouettes.

Streetwear/Hoodies

Comfortable fashion is still incredibly popular. Instead of athleisure, though, this season featured streetwear. Fenty Puma by Rihanna was all over this trend with almost every model strutting down the catwalk in baggy jeans, sweatpants, sneakers, beanies and the hoodie. Hoodies were the piece de resistance this Fashion Week. Alexander Wang and Fenty Puma by Rihanna featured graphic-designed hoodies, but other designers took the piece to the next level. Lacoste and Public School both showed hoodie dresses, and Hood by Air debuted the avant garde backward hoodie.

Jumper Dresses

Layering is one of the best ways to stay warm in the winter, and one of the most popular ways designers served form and function was by layering dresses over button-up henleys, turtleneck sweaters and even longer dresses. The styling was a great way to play with the aforementioned mixed-media trend, whether it was Tibi layering a shiny silky dress over a velvet top or Novis layering a jumper over a chunky knit. The look doesn’t have to be dowdy, either. Altuzarra showed an unbuttoned paisley print dress over a deep V-neck shirt.
