Red Cross Announces Fourth of July Giveaway
Thanks to the success of its Memorial Day weekend giveaway, the American Red Cross is offering another promotional product to recruit blood donors during the Fourth of July weekend.
From July 1 through July 5, people who donate blood will receive a free, limited-edition Red Cross lunch cooler. In the past, The Red Cross has given out promotional products such as logoed baseball caps, beach towels and T-shirts.
During the months of June, July and August, about two fewer donors on average schedule an appointment to give blood, says spokesperson Kara Lusk Dudley. “This seasonal challenge can be overcome if at least two more people above what’s expected come out to give blood at each drive this summer,” Dudley says.
In addition, high schools and colleges, which traditionally host blood drives and are responsible for 20% of annual blood donations, remain dormant while students are out of class. The Red Cross must collect 14,000 blood donations every day to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.
The Red Cross has also created a blood donor app that allows you to schedule appointments, track donations, earn rewards and store health history information such as blood pressure.
Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height), and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
