Sex Pistols Release ‘God Save the Queen’ Coin as Platinum Jubilee Nears
The legendary punk band has paired the coin with an NFT in what’s a unique – and cheeky – merch offering in the lead-up to Queen Elizabeth II’s special celebration.
The Sex Pistols are introducing a little anarchy to the jubilee.
In the lead-up to Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebration this weekend in the United Kingdom, the legendary British punk rockers have released a commemorative coin and related NFT offering that plays off of their 1977 single “God Save the Queen.” The coin/NFT also comes as the Sex Pistols re-release the song.

The double-sided coin features the Sex Pistols logo on one side and an image of Queen Elizabeth with a safety pin through her nose on the other. Originally released along with the single, the depiction of the queen is one of punk rock’s iconic images, representing the spirit of the aggressive song, which delivered a sense of defiance and rebellion against what the band viewed as an oppressive authority and class system.
Complementing the coin are non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, which are unique and non-interchangeable units of data stored on a blockchain that can be anything digital, such as drawings, music or even promotional products.
The Sex Pistols said the NFT collection features a number of designs that are randomly assigned upon minting. The NFTs are being minted on the Palm Network. Purchasers will be able to access the NFTs through a dedicated website – The Pistol Mint – at a future date.
Those in the market for more traditional jubilee merch will find no shortage of it, with apparel, chinaware, coins, flags, bags and drinkware among the many products. Indeed, the Royal Collection Shop had to temporarily suspend online ordering due to what it described as unprecedented demand.
