Dr. Fauci Merch Abounds on Ecommerce Sites
Items include a hat in which “Fauci” is rendered as “Faucci” to mimic the “Gucci” logo. Meanwhile, a bobblehead debuted April 1.
Dr. Anthony Fauci has emerged as a trusted reassuring voice of reason and guidance in the United States’ desperate fight against the fast-spreading coronavirus.
So popular has the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases become that a bevy of branded merchandise bearing his name and/or likeness has sprung up on ecommerce sites around the Internet. And, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum on Wednesday (April 1) released a Dr. Fauci bobblehead.
“It was bound to happen,” writes Emilia Petrarca in an article for The Cut. “Merch has always served as a reflection of the times — a memento of a certain moment or, now, a micromoment. It allows us to repackage big ideas in ways that are eye-catching and easily digestible and fast. … Everything has been merchified.”
Some of the Dr. Fauci merch is being used to support good causes. For instance, a brand called Social Distancing Hat was selling dad hats with Fauci’s last name written as “Faucci” in the script of the Gucci logo. Profits from sales were being donated to Meals On Wheels, a program that delivers food to people, especially the elderly, who can’t purchase or prepare their own meals. The creator of the hats told The Cut that, as of March 27, he’d sold $6,000 in hats from his collection, which also includes dad hats that simply say “Social Distancing.”
In another do-good initiative, The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum will be donating $5 from every Dr. Fauci Bobblehead sold to the American Hospital Association in support of the 100 Million Mask Challenge, a grassroots effort to increase the United States’ supply of medical masks. Standing on a base bearing his name, the bobblehead features Fauci wearing a suit and illustrating how the nation needs to “flatten the curve.” The Fauci bobbleheads cost $25. They’re on pre-order now. They’re expected to ship in July.
“We received a lot of requests for a bobblehead of Dr. Fauci and are excited to be able to use the bobblehead to raise funds for a vital organization that is helping limit the spread of the coronavirus while making people smile during these unprecedented times,” said Phil Sklar, co-founder of the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum.
While the bobblehead and Fauci cap from Social Distancing Hat have charitable angles, other merch themed around America’s most famous physician was being sold for profit on sites that ranged from Etsy to Amazon and Redbubble. Items included T-shirts, stickers, posters, hooded sweatshirts, mugs, tumblers, blankets, phone cases, prayer candles, tapestries and more. Messaging on the items generally expressed support for the doctor, with graphics that say things such as “In Fauci We Trust,” “Dr. Fauci: The Real MVP,” “I (heart sign) Dr. Fauci,” “Fauci For President” and more. Here’s a look at some of it:
Some coronavirus-themed merchandise that has gone on sale at online retail has come under criticism for being tactless and tone deaf. Etsy, for example, recently removed items that made light of COVID-19 with what some described as tasteless puns and jokes.
During the coronavirus pandemic, promotional products firms have been orchestrating merch-driven fundraisers to support local businesses, musicians and restaurants and first responders.
