Moderne Glass Recalls Coffee Mugs Due to Burn Risk
The drinkware can crack and break when it comes into contact with hot beverages. No injuries have yet been reported.
Aliquippa, PA-based Moderne Glass Company (asi/71920), in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a product recall for ceramic coffee mugs due to a burn risk.
The 15-oz. mugs can crack and break when hot beverages are poured into them, posing a risk of injury. So far, the supplier has received six reports of cracking but no injuries.
The ceramic mugs, made in China and measuring 4 inches high x 3 inches wide, have a black exterior with white interior and white top rim. Model number “71500-White” is printed on the bottom. Moderne Glass says it sold about 2,500 pieces total at glassamerica.com between February 2021 and February 2022.
“We were notified by a customer that their end-user had an issue with the Robusta Mug cracking when filled with hot liquids,” Kristina Fredericks, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Moderne Glass, told ASI Media. “We immediately tested the lot of mugs in our warehouse and found they were in fact defective, and would crack when filled with hot water.”
Fredericks said that upon the discovery, staff quarantined the inventory in the warehouse, called all customers who had ordered from the defective lot, notified the CPSC and put an alert on the company website. She added: “All stock of this mug has been destroyed and discontinued from our line.”
Moderne Glass and the CPSC advise that end-users should stop using the mugs immediately and contact Moderne Glass for a full refund. The company can be contacted at (800) 645-5131 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or by email at bailejo@mglass.com.
