While sequins have long been associated with Motown artists like The Supremes, Diana Ross and The Jackson 5 – and had been popular for years before, including with the flapper set in the 1920s and ’30s – they’re making a comeback in a big way. Recently, they’ve been spotted on celebrities including Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Chastain, and they were front and center in Fendi’s Spring 2024 futurism-inspired collection.

And now, shiny sequins are showing up at the office – often on skirts, jackets and shoes paired with neutral, classic corporate wear like white button-downs and khaki pants.

“I made the conscious decision to start standing out and being seen,” Georgina Cook, a lawyer in London, recently told Frances Solá-Santiago at the Wall Street Journal, about her decision to begin wearing sequins to the office.

“Cook is part of the many working women disrupting office dress codes, not just on Fridays, but during the rest of the workweek, too,” writes Solá-Santiago, who goes on to cite the plethora of sequined options from high-end brands like Veronica Beard, Ann Taylor and Toccin.
