Promotions Planner: Opportunities for Education & Fun
Start presenting ideas to clients for campaigns centered on September observances.
September is officially the month of returning to school, so it’s fitting that it’s full of education-centered observances that encourage book-reading, professional development and safety. It’s also a time to enjoy leisure activities – in fact, September includes National Bowling League Day. With millions of people of all ages bowling each year, it remains one of the most popular sports in the country.
Sept. 3/National Bowling League Day
Bowling is having a moment – about 70 million Americans bowled at least once in 2023, and more than a million regularly compete in events certified by the U.S. Bowling Congress. This day is set aside to encourage and celebrate the formation of leagues at local alleys.
PITCH: Alleys that are home to leagues can give accessories like shirts, gloves and bags to new participants.
Sept. 6/National Food Bank Day
This observance encourages people to donate to and volunteer at their local food banks, where demand has been high over the past couple of years. It’s also a time to raise awareness of food insecurity and the importance of food banks and soup kitchens that serve local communities.
PITCH: Food banks can distribute shirts and caps to volunteers and give out reusable, durable tote bags to encourage food donations.
Sept. 7/Buy a Book Day
Bookstores can encourage patronage with author readings, specials and discounts on merchandise this day, which raises awareness of the cultural importance of reading and maintaining personal libraries.
PITCH: Suggest that bookstores have tables of giveaways for book lovers, like bookmarks, magnets, keytags and pins.
Sept. 22/American Business Women’s Day
This day marks 75 years since the founding of the American Business Women’s Association, which aims to bring together professional women across all occupations and give them opportunities for professional development and networking.
PITCH: Propose that local clients with female staff host educational and networking sessions this day, and give out branded items to commemorate the occasion.
Sept. 26/National Situational Awareness Day
Situational awareness is a critical safety skill – it’s the practice of being aware of one’s surroundings at all times, which helps with hazard identification, accident prevention and quick decision-making. Workplaces and community centers host educational sessions this day.
PITCH: Recommend that organizations holding events give out informational brochures.
