Promotions Planner: Teachable Moments
Start presenting ideas to clients for campaigns centered on May observances.
According to the Institute of Museum and Library Services, there are more than 30,000 museums in the U.S., which welcome millions of visitors each year for exhibits and educational sessions. While the industry continues to recover post-COVID, International Museum Day – celebrated on May 18 this year – is an ideal opportunity to encourage visits and new members at both large, nationally recognized museums and smaller community cultural centers. The May observances listed here are perfect starting points for upcoming spring campaigns.
Lupus Awareness Month
In May, healthcare providers and advocates raise awareness of lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, and encourage support for those afflicted – the Lupus Foundation of America estimates that about 1.5 million Americans have a form of it.
PITCH: Organizations will hold fundraisers this month. Suggest that they give out branded awareness items in purple, the color of lupus awareness.
May 4/National Fitness Day
This day is set aside to encourage people to incorporate more exercise into their daily routines, for better overall health and longevity.
PITCH: Gyms and fitness studios can run membership specials this day and give out branded kits to new clients.
May 7/National Teacher’s Day
Reward instructors, assistants and student teachers for their hard work and dedication this day with branded gifts.
PITCH: Think high-end drinkware, tech accessories or garments with a thank-you message and personalization.
May 18/International Museum Day
Hosted by the International Council of Museums, this observance is set aside to encourage support of museums and their role in cultural preservation.
PITCH: Recommend that museums sell special observance-themed tote bags this day.
May 27/National Sunscreen Day
As the summer season kicks off, healthcare providers look to remind the public about the importance of using sunscreen in prolonged exposure to sunshine.
PITCH: Present sunscreen kits to dermatologist offices who can give them out to patients with important reminders.
