Promotions Planner: Beat the Cold Weather
Start presenting ideas to clients for promotions centered on February observances.
It may be one of the coldest months of the year for much of the country, but February presents lots of promotional opportunities targeting library enthusiasts, dental patients, homemade soup afficionados, budding musicians and more.
Library Lovers Month
Declared by the American Libraries Association, this observance recognizes the importance of private and public libraries as well as those in schools. It celebrates the many services libraries provide, including access to the internet, and the reference expertise of librarians. It also emphasizes the ongoing support that libraries require to keep their doors open to patrons.
PITCH: Think special events at the local town library and educational presentations at those in schools. Visitors will appreciate book-themed items, like a heavy-duty tote for library book hauls.
National Children’s Dental Health Month
Healthy dental habits, like regular brushing and flossing, need to be instilled early on for long-term oral health. That’s why the American Dental Association has set aside February as a month dedicated to educating children on best teeth-cleaning practices and parents on helping them keep track.
PITCH: Present fun giveaways to kids, like brushes and fluoride toothpaste in logoed gift bags, along with branded educational brochures and tools to encourage good oral hygiene.
Feb. 4/National Homemade Soup Day
In the cold winter months, a cup of hot soup brings immediate warmth and comfort. The promise of homemade chicken noodle or split pea and ham on a frosty day is sure to attract customers to pubs, diners and cafés. In addition to sidewalk A-frame signs promoting specials, consider patron thank-you gifts.
PITCH: Restaurants can advertise soup specials on their menus, and loyal customers can receive reusable takeaway containers for leftovers.
Feb. 11/Get Out Your Guitar Day
Whether they’re timid amateurs or seasoned professionals, everyone is encouraged to break out their six-string and jam on this day. Music lesson facilities can offer discounts for new students, and bars with live music can promote their guests that day with a guitar theme on signage and napkins.
PITCH: Consider guitar-themed giveaways for bar patrons and new music students.
Feb. 13/Galentine’s Day
As first seen on the NBC sitcom Parks & Recreation, the day before Valentine’s Day is a time for women to get together and celebrate each other and their many personal and professional accomplishments. Restaurants, bars, wineries and spas can host specials and give out themed gifts for parties above a certain number.
PITCH: Think trendy drinkware, food gifts and relaxation items for women celebrating their family and friends.
Feb. 18/National Caregivers Day
Assisted living facilities can be cost-prohibitive these days, meaning family members of the elderly and those with disabilities – including those not trained in skilled nursing – are oftentimes caring for them at home. Whether the caregiver is a seasoned professional or a loving family member, this day honors the many sacrifices they make for the well-being of others and the time and patience it takes to care for them.
PITCH: Educational brochures on common challenges, including dementia/Alzheimer’s, fall risks, diet, exercise and more, will be appreciated by caregivers.
