Promotions Planner: Year-End Events

Start presenting ideas to clients for campaigns centered on December observances.

Yes, it’s still late summer, but now’s the time to ask around in your local community to find out what small businesses have planned for the last month of the year, and give them suggestions to get the brainstorming started. With supply chain challenges persisting, proactive ordering is essential this year.

Dec. 2/Special Education Day

This day is set aside to celebrate the signing, in 1975, of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which granted children with special needs the right to a public education in the U.S. People are invited to educate themselves on the IDEA and show support for educators who offer services to special needs students.

PITCH: Consider gifts for dedicated special education teachers, and program brochures for schools and resource centers.

Dec. 4/World Wildlife Conservation Day

Various institutions recognize World Wildlife Conservation Day as a time to educate on the threats of animal extinction, ecosystem disruption and trafficking, and the impact they have on the planet. In 2012, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for conservationists to raise awareness to these issues.

PITCH: Encourage nature centers, aquariums and zoos to host special educational sessions this day, with wildlife-themed giveaways for attendees.

Dec. 10/National Lager Day

Approach breweries, bars and restaurants and remind them of this observance that celebrates lager, a light, effervescent beer. In German, “lager” means “storage” – it refers to the cool area where this type of beer is supposed to be housed before consumption, traditionally in the same caves where it was fermented.

PITCH: Present lager glasses and coasters as giveaways for brewery and bar patrons this day, along with signage promoting lager specials.

Dec. 17/National Maple Syrup Day

Derived from maple trees, this natural syrup is a favorite topping for pancakes. The Canadian province of Quebec is the world’s top producer of maple syrup, exporting nearly 70% of global supply, according to Statistics Canada. It’s also used to make candies in Canada and the northernmost states in the U.S.

PITCH: Help diners and restaurants that serve breakfast to promote their maple syrup offerings with signage for pancake specials, raffle baskets for lucky patrons and maple candies.
